A Belmopan man accused and convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in March 2011 and sentence to 15 years for rape and 10 years for robbery at gun point is now free of those convictions. Belmopan resident, Alberto Ical saw his conviction quashed and he was acquitted.

On March 11, 2011, Ical was convicted of rape and robbery of a woman in Belmopan. The woman testified in court that she was walking in the market square area heading to catch a bus when she was held at gun point by Ical. She said she was ordered to get undressed and fearing for her life, she complied. She said that her attacker raped her in the drain and robbed her of a silver ring and $250 in cash.

At his appeal on June 12, 2017, his attorney, Anthony Sylvester, argued his appeal case on three grounds and was successful. While Ical was set free from the rape and robbery, he is serving time at the Belize Central Prison for two other rape convictions. His earliest release date is set for 2028.
