Over 280 police officers of varying ranks were recognized in an award ceremony at the National Police Training Academy in Belmopan on Thursday of last week. It was an opportunity for members of the public and the media to witness the rewarding of police officers for their long service, good conduct, merit and distinguished service during the observance of Police Week.

In his address, Assistant Commissioner of Police Robert Mariano congratulated the distinguished police officers for their “…long years of commitment, dedication and loyalty to the Belize Police Department and to the citizens and visitors of Belize.”

Police officers were awarded under various categories such as for continuous service in the Police Department for 18, 25 and 30 years.

Then there were recipients of the Distinguished Service Medal and these were reserved for “…senior police officers up and above the rank of senior superintendent, who have rendered especially distinguished services to the state or the department as members of the department, who have performed an exceptional act of gallantry in the execution of their duties,” said Mariano.

Such an award for the Distinguished Service Medal  went to A.C.P Noel Leal, A.C.P Keith Lino, A.C.P Joseph Myvette, A.C.P Aaron Guzman, A.C.P Robert Mariano, A.C.P Chester Williams and A.C.P Edward Broaster. With the medals being pinned to shirts by His Excellency the Governor General Sir Colville Young, these also went to Senior Superintendent Marlon Allen, Alden Dawson, Alford Grinage, Bartholomew Jones, Andrew Ramirez, Dennis Arnold, Marco Vidal, Lincoln Hemsley, Linden Flowers and Howell Gillett.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Robert Mariano gave special thanks to the Belize Airport Concession Company for their generous donation towards a successful Police Week 2017.

The Hon. Elodio Aragon Junior, who is responsible for the Police, in giving a toast to all present, also congratulated the men and women of the Belize Police Department “…for their service to this Nation.”

Recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, Superintendent Reymundo Reyes, who is now the Officer Commanding of the Intermediate Southern Formation told the Guardian that he thanks the Lord for giving him strength and that he felt greatly rewarded.  (Reyes will soon be transferred to the Eastern Division North as the Deputy Commander and is known within the Police Department as among the best police investigators.)

The award to our deserving Police Officers was just a part of the many activities held across Belize from June 18th to the 24th in celebrating Police Week under the theme: Police and the Community working in partnership for a safer Belize. According to Commissioner of Police Alan Whylie, in his recent Nationwide address, “Police Week is an important event for the Belize Police Department as it is a week dedicated to pay honor and respect to all serving members of the department and their families.

“ …as well as to remember those officers, who lost their lives over the years in service to their Country, Police Week allows us to recognize that sacrifice and it reminds all of us in the Department as well as well as those we serve on the honorable and noble profession of being a police officer.”
