A 22-year-old student of the University of Belize was busted with 12 pounds of cannabis and was arraigned in court on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. He was read a single charge of drug trafficking before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser after a night of lock down. He is Gian Carlo Espadas who was intercepted by MIT personnel.

Allegations made against Espadas are that on Sunday, June 25, 2017, police of the MIT (Mobile Interdiction Team) intercepted a Kia Sportage in the West Landivar area where they met the occupant of the vehicle, identified as  Espadas, in possession of 5.46 kilograms of marijuana.

He was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another person or persons for the purpose of drug trafficking.

In court, where he was represented by attorneys Leeroy Banner and Bryan Neal, Espadas pleaded not guilty. While there was no objection to bail, Senior Magistrate, Sharon Fraser granted him bail with conditions in the sum of $8,000 plus two sureties of $4,000 each in which he was ordered to surrender his passport to the Clerk of Court and he was told he could not leave the country without the permission of the court. Espadas was able to meet bail and is due back in court on September 1, 2017.
