The Cycling Federation of Belize held its National Road Championship on Sunday 25th June, 2017, in three categories namely Elite, U-23, Masters; Female and the Junior and Youths.

In the Elite, U-23 and Masters Category, some 28 cyclists signed up to participate in the event but on race day only 21 cyclists stared the course with only 13 cyclists completed the 105 miles event, which started out in Dangriga Town and concluded at Leslie’s Imports at 1.5 miles on the George Price Highway.

At the conclusion of the event, Edgar Nissan Arana of Westrac Alliance Cycling Team rode into the history books, when he was the first rider to cross the finish line in a time of 4:26:05 to capture the 2017 National Road Championship.

Arana was followed by Brandon Cattouse of Smart/CRay Western Spirit Cycling Team in a time of 4:33:10 to claim second place. The third rider to cross the finish line was Ron Vasquez also of Smart/CRay Western Spirit Cycling Team.

Robert Liam Stewart unattached finished fourth in the event but was the first Masters to cross the finish line. Stewart was followed by Giovanni Lovell of Digicell 4G Elite Cycling Team to finish fifth in a time of 4:40:29 to round off the top five finishers.

The other top finishers in this event included Tarique Flowers of Benny’s Megabytes Elite and he was followed by Herman Requena of Westrac Alliance who finished the course in a time of 5:00:32 and he was followed by Angel Tzib also of Westrac Alliance who finished the event in a time of 5:17:13 and he was followed by Shane Jones also of Westrac Alliance who finished the event in a time of 5:17:35 and he was followed by Darrnel Barrow of Benny’s Begabytes to found off the top ten cyclists in the 2017 National Road Championship.

The Female National Road Championship commenced from Armenia Village on the Hummingbird Highway and concluded at Leslie’s Imports at 1.5 miles on the George Price Highway.

The 58 miles event saw the participation of seven cyclists in which rookie Taralee Ordonez of Belize Bank Swoosh was the first rider to cross the finish line in a time of 3:26:00 to capture her first National Road Championship title.

Ordonez was followed by Kaya Cattouse of C-Ray Cycling Team to take second place and she was followed by Alicia Thompson of the Belize Bank Swoosh, Patricia Chavarria of Chavarria Cycling and Kaylynn Gillett of Belize Bank Swoosh to round off the top five finishers of the event.

And in the Junior and Youth category, the 63 miles event started out at the Blue Hole on the Hummingbird Highway and also concluded at Leslie’s Imports at 1.5 miles on the George Price Highway.

The first rider to cross the finish line was Nashen Ysaguirre of Cabral/Marin Cycling Team in a time of 2:59:23. He was followed by Wilhelm Coye of Imani’s Team and he was followed by Shaun Codd who is unattached and he was followed by Gian Lino of Cabral/Marin Cycling Team and he was followed by Joshua Fuller of Smart Team to round off the top cyclists in the event.
