A 17 year-old minor was picked up and questioned by police for the murder of 22 year-old Belize City resident, Trevaun Chee. This Mahogany Street youth was clubbed across the head with a metal bat, and he later died.

At around 2 p.m. of Friday, July 21, police had to rush Chee to the hospital after they found him bleeding from the mouth and an injury to the head. He was in the near proximity of his Mahogany Street extension home, and according to police, he encountered the minor. Police say that the two had a confrontation, and that’s when the young man pulled a bat and struck him several times with it over the head. Police say that the minor pulled the metal bat, and that was the weapon he used to assault Chee with.

He was conscious when the police arrived, and they rushed him to the KHMH, where he received medical treatment. He was responsive at the hospital, but 2 days later, on Sunday, he passed away after his prognosis changed drastically.

Investigators say that they have detained a minor who has given them a statement under caution. It appears that the two had some sort of misunderstanding several months ago. If directed, the police may charge this minor for the murder of Chee.

His family declined to comment to the press, but police encountered Chee last year. He was initially charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, wounding, and use of deadly means of harm. He was charged with another person for the shooting of a 29 year-old. Police later withdrew the attempted murder charge against him.

There is also a completely different assessment of his character, which directly contradicts the type of behavior suggested by those criminal charges. Police Sergeant Brent Hamilton, who was once a major part of the community outreach initiative from the Lake Independence area, which surrounds the Mahogany Street Police Sub-Station, discussed his impression of Chee. He said that he only encountered Chee over the course of 6 months, but in that time, this young man appeared determined to avoid the street life. The officer said that Chee appeared disciplined.
