Beacon advance to finals of city senior female softball competition Print E-mail

The Belize City Softball Association 2017 Senior Female competition is fast winding down at Rogers Stadium in Belize City.

On Friday 4th August, Beacon eliminated the four time defending Belize City champions the Belize Bank Bulldogs, when it defeated it by the score of 9-8 in the third and final game of the playoff series between the two teams.

Beacon, batting in the top of the first inning, drew blood first when it scored 2 runs to take an early 2-0 lead. The Belize Bank Bulldogs replied with 4 runs of its own in the bottom of the 1st inning to take a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Beacon scored 1 run to cut the deficit to a 4-3 game. However, the Belize Bank Bulldogs batting in the bottom of the fourth inning scored 3 more runs to increase its lead to a 7-3 game. In the top of the fifth inning, the Beacon offence chipped away with another run to bring the game into a 7-4 range.

With the game a mere 3 run deficit, the Belize Bank Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth inning scored its final run of the game to increase the lead once again over Beacon by the score of 8-4.

Beacon, coming to bat in the top of the 7th inning and on the short end of an 8-4 game, would not go gently and quietly into that good night before erupting for 5 runs and a 9-8 lead. The defending champion on the brink of elimination did stirred some noise in the bottom of the 7th inning when it loaded the bases with two outs, however, Beacon’s starting and winning pitcher Kenisha Sutherland struck out the Belize Bank Bulldogs to preserved the win for her team and a place in the National Women’s Championship.

Beacon on Wednesday 2nd August, forced the third and final game in the series, when it defeated the Belize Bank Bulldogs by the score of 6-5 to force the third and pivotal game. The Belize Bank Bulldogs took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. Beacon batting in their half of the inning chipped away at the lead which allowed it to score 3 runs.

It was not until the bottom of the sixth inning that Beacon tied the score at 4-4 when it scored a single run. In the top of the seventh inning, Belize Bank Bulldogs responded and scored the go ahead run that gave it a 5-4 lead.

Beacon batting in the bottom of the seventh inning and with their season on the line, was no doubt testing the hands of faith when it exploded for 2 runs that gave it the win.

The winning pitcher for Beacon was Kenisha Sutherland and the losing pitcher was Kenrene Gillett.
