A woman, Kaysha Arnold, was robbed on Saturday, August 12, 2017 in Belize City. Although she managed to put up a fight against her two attackers, they managed to overpower her and run off with her cell phone.

The incident occurred on Newtown Barracks. According to Arnold, she was walking toward the Ramada Hotel when she was approached by two men. According to the victim, one of the men grabbed her around her neck while she was on her cell phone. The other man rushed toward her and although she did not see an object in his hand, fearing for her life she dropped her cell phone. The men ran off with the phone and managed to escape until they were picked up by police and jointly charged with robbery.

This duo was positively identified by the woman as her attackers. The men, Joshua Daniel Augustine and Antwone Rivero, were arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza for the offense of robbery. Both men pleaded not guilty.

While they were not accused of using a firearm, the prosecutor in the case, Cpl. Christopher Smith, objected to bail being granted to the duo. He submitted that the men were both positively identified by their victim in an identification parade. He also submitted that it is the prosecution’s fear that if the accused men are granted bail, they may try to interfere with the victim.

Magistrate Mendoza agreed and both Augustine and Rivero were denied bail and remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until October 2017. The men are due back in court on October 10, 2017.
