On Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 5:05 p.m., police visited the Yo Creek Village in Orange Walk where they saw 30-year-old Dwayne Almendarez of Union Town area, Orange Walk Town, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigations revealed that earlier that evening, a Customs officer supported by BDF soldiers conducted a search on a passenger bus in the area where they attempted to confiscate some uncustomed goods. An altercation reportedly ensued during which Almendarez assaulted the officers. The crowd threw rocks at the team. The team fired a warning shot as a result. The shot did not deter Almendarez. He continued to attack the officer who, in fear for his life, pulled out his 9mm pistol and fired several shots causing injuries to Almendarez.
