Over the weekend the PUP held a convention in Punta Gorda to select candidates for the municipals. Well when it was all over it was as if it never started. They had dusted off the good old Carlos Galvez to run as mayor and after overworking, there were a mere 518 persons who voted. The other two candidates Charles Selgado got 191 votes, Joseph Martinez got 46 and Soraya Roches got 35 votes. To say the least the turnout was pathetic and indicative of the kind of support that the PUP has in that municipality.

It is noteworthy that there is an open feud at this time between the current PUP representative Michael Espat and Galvez and it’s evident as Espat was nowhere to be found during the convention. More so he is simply nowhere to be found in the entire constituency and much less in the municipality.

And this type of pathetic turnout for the PUP seems to be the norm. Just last week a mere 345 persons elected Marconi Matus to be the mayoral candidate in San Ignacio and Santa Elena. In Dangriga the turnout was no different. It clearly is a trend and one that will see no improvement in the coming weeks leading to next year March.
