The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is pleased to announce that Taiwan’s Forestry Bureau of the Council of Agriculture is happy to support the conservation work in the beautiful Chiquibul National Park for the third straight year. Through a contribution of US$10,000 to Belize’s “Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD)”, this year’s sponsorship will particularly help manage and protect the Chiquibul Cave System.

The Chiquibul Cave System, deeply situated in the Chiquibul National Park, is the largest and longest cave system in Central America as well as a world class cultural heritage. However, it is relatively unknown and a robust management presence is needed. The surrounding forest cover is also under continuous peril from illegal extractors. The FCD will therefore make the best use of the contribution from Taiwan’s Forestry Bureau to strengthen a management presence that can better monitor and protect the system, while raising visibility about the importance of this highly unknown and unique habitat. Additionally the FCD hopes to promote, conserve and protect the biological, geological, and cultural environments of the Chiquibul Cave System in a sustainable manner for Belize and the world.

Over the past two years, the FCD and Taiwan’s Forestry Bureau together have conducted a successful conservation project of scarlet macaws - the most magnificent but endangered of the parrots in Belize and Central America. The Forestry Bureau of Taiwan was instrumental in providing the necessary funds to start up the laboratory, flight cage and educational materials. This year’s financial support will further build on this conservation success.

Through Chiquibul conservation and many other cooperation projects, the Government of the ROC (Taiwan) continues to pride itself as a committed development partner for Belize in its unwavering pursuit of upgrading and diversifying its economy and sustainable development.
