The Belize City family of 24 year-old Ryan “Fish” Thompson continues to mourn his untimely and violent death. Gunmen shot him right outside of his house, just as he arrived home. His two young daughters and his girlfriend were at home when he was attacked.

Thompson’s relatives told the press that he arrived at his home on Neal Penn Road Extension at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2017. He was just about to open the door to the house when a gunman emerged from the darkness and immediately started shooting at him. Thompson was injured to the left side of his chest, and to the right leg, and as soon as the gunfire subsided, first responders found him where he had collapsed.

They rushed him to the KHMH, where the doctors performed surgery to try and save his life. He was placed in a medically induced coma after the operation, but his injuries were severe.

His mother, Stephanie Espinosa, told the press, “He went through the surgery. After he came out, he was in a coma. The doctor said that it was a 50/50 chance…He had internal bleeding. His organs, 5 of them got really damaged.”

At around 2:56 a.m. on Monday, August 21, about 6 and a half hours later, he passed away from the internal damage caused by the bullet to the chest. As readers would imagine, his loved-ones are hurting, and they want the police to bring his killers to justice. No one knows why he was shot, and police are investigating. His family does have one theory, however. They suspect that he may have been killed because he and other persons caught a man suspected of stealing a weed whacker. They allegedly gave the man a beat down, before taking him to the police station. Thompson’s family believes that this incident may somehow be connected to his death.

His mother also freely acknowledged to the press, “Yes, he did [have enemies]… I just talked to him and to let him know that he needs to be careful.”

She is concerned about her granddaughters, Ryan Thompson’s 2 year-old and 4 year-old children who are left fatherless in this tragedy. She reflected on his affection for his two girls saying, “He has 2 daughters. They are his eyeballs. They are his whole world in fact, and he was everything, everything to them. They lived with him. So, it will be hard for them.”

Up until the time of his death, Thompson was a laborer who used to support his family as a yard cutter or by taking jobs from neighbors who needed helpers to complete various types of labor.

On August 22, 2017, police arrested and charged 24-year-old Jevon Belizaire for the murder of Thompson. Belizaire escaped police custody on August 22, 2017. He is wanted by police.
