Taxi drivers in Western Belize are once again becoming the focus of criminals. At 8:50 p.m on Saturday Efrain Cu was observed by Police to be suffering from four gunshot wounds.  The taxi driver from Santa Elena had a wound on the right upper shoulder, left chest and upper leg.

Cu had picked up three strangers at the Cayo Welcome Center in central San Ignacio and drove them to a location near the Collins Boulevard near the Bullet Tree Road. There he was shot and his Geo Prizm valued at $10,500.00 was then forcefully taken from him.

Cu is now in stable condition at the Western Regional Hospital.

Police have in the past said that a criminal gang operates in Western Cayo where the modus operandi is to forcefully take command of vehicles and then drive them across the porous Belize-Guatemala border. While some stolen vehicles have been recovered in Melchor de Mencos, Police have cautioned Belizeans to always be alert of their surroundings.

In our visit to Melchor de Mencos on Tuesday we saw no signs of these vehicles. (The bustling municipality is clean and orderly with soldiers walking about unarmed near the business areas.) The George Price Highway from San Ignacio to Benque also had vehicular checkpoints, routes that criminals are reluctant to take when bringing Belizean vehicles across.
