Daphnie Polanco, a 12 year-old resident of the Stann Creek District, was killed in a traffic accident on the Phillip Goldson Highway on Independence Day. Her family got into a traffic accident with persons who were rushing to get out in front of the heavy traffic after the Orange Walk Carnival Road March. The two vehicles in the accident flipped multiple times before coming to a complete stop.

It happened some time before 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at mile 26 and a half. Daphnie Polanco, was traveling with her family members in a blue Mazda 4X4 pickup. In the vehicle with her at the time were David Polanco, Darcie Lopez-Polanco, Davina Polanco, Davisha Polanco, and Tyrone Parham. They were heading in the direction of Belize City, when they were hit by a grey Toyota Corolla car which was also heading in the same direction.

Inside that Toyota were Jadiel Usher and Dion Skeen, and drivers on the road reported that this vehicle was overtaking several vehicles on the highway.

Readers may be aware that after the Carnival Road March in Orange Walk Town, there are usually hundreds of Belizeans from all over the country who are traveling the road. So, when the Toyota Corolla made contact with the Mazda pickup, and they went barreling off the road, it caused panic. The other drivers worried that they might get caught up in the accident.

The Toyota Corolla came to a stop with its wheels up in the air, and the two occupants, Usher and Skeen walked away unhurt. The occupants of the Mazda pickup were not so fortunate, and they suffered varying degrees of injuries, but Daphnie Polanco lost her life. She suffered severe head injuries, and she died on the spot.
