Blake Norman Lewis, an 18 year-old resident of Hattieville, has been arrested and charged for the murder of 62 year-old Marcel Samuels, a resident from Belize City who made a living as a butcher and a jeweler.

Samuels’ family has declined any comments to the press but reports are that he and his wife were walking on the Butcher Burns Road, which is just off the George Price Highway at mile 19. They were heading to his live stock farm, located in the very same Butcher Burns area.

He was known to make this trip very regularly on Friday mornings, where he would go for meat to run his business. It is believed that his killer and his accomplice quite possibly knew his routine. So, at around 5:45 a.m. on Friday, September 29, two men quickly rode up to them on motorcycle.

On of the men pulled out a gun and shot Samuels in the head, and the other reportedly pulled out a machete and hit his wife with it. After that deadly attack, both men rode off and escaped. There is nothing to explain this senseless murder of an elderly man; the assailants did not try to rob him, or anything of the sort. They simply came, shot him in the head and fled the scene.

Well, police believe that the shooter was Blake Lewis from Hattieville, and he has already been arraigned before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court date, which is set for November 17.

At this time, the only plausible explanation why anyone may have had a quarrel with the elderly gentleman is a case where 4 of his cattle were stolen last year. He reported the incident to police, and 2 men were criminally charged for the theft. It may well be an attempt to force the end of the case by silencing the main complainant, in this case, Marcel Samuels.
