Belmopan Bandits edge out the San Pedro Pirates Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize Opening Season competition continued over the weekend with 4 games on the schedule.

On Saturday 30th September, 2017, at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town, the defending champions and current leaders in this year’s Opening Season the Belmopan Bandits edged out the San Pedro Pirates by the score of 2-1.

The host team San Pedro Pirates was the first onto the scoreboard when Jesse Smith scored his team’s only goal of the game in the 45th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The San Pedro Pirates took the 1-0 lead well into the second half of the game before the visiting Belmopan Bandits was able to find the goal area. The Belmopan Bandits finally made it onto the scoreboard when Elroy Smith scored the equalising goal in the 72nd minute of play via a penalty kick.

The final goal of the game was scored by the Belmopan Bandits’ Armando Gaitan in the 84th minute of play to give his team the 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, out at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village, the home team Placencia Assassins defeated the visiting Belize Defence Force by the score of 3-1.

The Placencia Assassins was the first onto the scoreboard when Alexander Peters scored the 1st goal of the game to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Belize Defence Force (BDF) was able to tie the score at 1-1 when Vallan Symms scored the equalising goal in the 29th minute of play. However, that was short lived as Luis Torres scored the go-ahead goal for the Placencia Assassins in the 38th minute of play to give his team a 2-1 lead.

The Placencia Assassins went into the half time with the 2-1 lead and maintained its composure in the 2nd half when Alton Foreman scored the 3rd and final goal of the game for the Placencia Assassins in the 65th minute of play for the 3-1 victory.

The competition then continued on Sunday 1st October, 2017, with two more games. At the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga Town, the visiting Verdes FC edged out the host team Wagiya FC by the score of 4-3.

The host team Wagiya FC was the first on the scoreboard when Krisean Lopez scored the first of his two goals in the 3rd minute of play to give his team an early 1-0 lead. However, the Verdes FC equalised the score at 1-1 when Alcides Thomas scored his 1st goal of the game in the 18th minute of play. The visiting Verdes FC then took the lead when Elroy Kuylen scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 26th minute of play that gave his team a 2-1 lead.

In the 45th minute of play, Krisean Lopez scored his 2nd goal of the game for Wagiya that tie the score at 2-2.

In the second half of the game, Alcides Thomas scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 65th minute of play to give Verdes FC a 3-2 lead, however, that was short lived as Davis Marshall scored the equalising goal in the 71st minute of play for the host team Wagiya. The final goal of the game was scored by Jarret Davis in the 73rd minute of play to give Verdes FC the 4-3 victory.

And in the final game of the day played out at the Victor Sanchez Union Field in Punta Gorda Town, Police United FC defeated the Freedom Fighters by the score of 2-1.

The Freedom Fighters was the first to make it onto the scoreboard when Leary Simon scored his team’s only goal of the game in the 32nd minute of play via a penalty kick to give his team a 1-0 lead.

It was not until the second half of the game that the Police United squad was able to penetrate the Freedom Fighters defence and tallied twice. The 1st goal for the Police United was scored by Amin August in the 54th minute of play and the 2nd goal was scored by Daniel Jimenez in the 88th minute of play.

The competition will continue this coming weekend with four more games on the schedule.
