On October 11, 2017 at around 2:30 p.m., police officers responded to a fatal traffic accident between miles 32 and 33 on the Southern Highway. There they saw a lifeless body with head and body injuries lying on the side of the road. The body was that of 32-year-old Sebastian Cucul, a laborer of San Isidoro Village. Cucul’s body was taken to the Dangriga morgue.

Investigations revealed that Cucul was riding his Skygo motorcycle towards Georgetown Village when he collided into the left side of a trailer truck which was travelling in the opposite direction. That truck was being driven by 33-year-old Hector Amilcar Melara of Hopkins. Melara has since been served an NIP as investigations continue.

Three days later on October 14, 2017, police visited mile 35 on the George Price Highway where the motionless body of Elroy Jones was seen under an 18-wheeleer towhead truck which was being used to clean up for the “Walk for a Green Belize” program. Attached to the truck was a cargo trailer and they were partially parked off the road facing Belmopan City.

Initial investigation revealed that the truck was being driven by 19-year-old Cornelius Schmitt of Spanish Lookout. Schmitt was driving the truck while Jones and other workers picked up bagged garbage. Jones fell from the truck and ended up under the wheel of the truck which crushed him.

Jones was taken to the Western Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:00 p.m. Schmitt has since been served with a notice of intended prosecution while investigations continue regarding the matter.
