A Belizean mason and contractor, 45-year-old Franklin Vernon, was taken to court on October 12, 2017 to answer to a single charge of possession of a controlled drug. Vernon was found in possession of 129 grams of cannabis earlier the same day.

Vernon appeared before Magistrate Michelle Trapp where he was read a single charge for drug trafficking. He plead not guilty to trafficking and contended that he was guilty of possession and not drug trafficking. Magistrate Trapp explained that he was not being charged for possession. Prosecutor Inspector Hector Rodriguez informed Vernon that while he is unable to accept his plea for possession, he will be updated at his next adjournment which is set for December 21, 2017.

Since there was no objection to bail, it was offered in the sum of $4,000 plus one surety of the same, which he was able to meet.
