On Monday morning residents of Carmelita woke of to the frustrating reality of having to deal with flooding. The continuous rainfall over the weekend caused some localized flooding in the village. Several residents came out to see how they could address the situation but there was not much that they could do without heavy equipment. Area representative Hon. Elodio Aragon, who is always abreast of what happens in his area, responded immediately and with the assistance of the Public Works Department personnel from Orange Walk tackled the problem.

The flooding was caused as a result of inadequate drainage due to clogged culverts and drains and also by damaged culverts. Two culverts which were near the worse area of flooding were replaced with larger ones and drains were re-opened and others were cleaned. This allowed the water to run freely towards the river which is nearby and the flood water receded rather quickly. There are some areas however which are basins and collect water. Hon. Aragon has requested that a study be done to see how they can address these areas in the future. Plans are also being made to replace two dilapidated wooden bridges which are used daily by residents who live on the other side of the creek over which they lay. The plans consist of replacing these bridges with higher and sturdier concrete bridges.
