The WestJet direct flight from Calgary, Canada to Belize was inaugurated on Friday, November 3, 2017. On that flight, there were over 120 passengers. To celebrate the occasion, the Belize Tourism Board hosted a small ribbon cutting ceremony.

According to Karen Bevans, Director of Tourism, the flight will have more than the obvious impacts on the tourism industry in Belize. The fast growing city of Calgary is home to a number of tourists that are eager to traverse to our tropical Belize and the advent of WestJet’s direct flight facilitates this process.

Besides an obvious influx of tourists coming to the country, there is also expected to be an increase of students leaving Belize to study in Canada. This creates opportunity for our Belizean people at a cheaper cost both in terms of travel and tuition.

Hon. Manuel Heredia, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, believes that we need to continue to promote and market Belize as a good tourist destination. “We have to market Belize good. We have to partner with airlines in order for more tourists to come to Belize. It is not an easy thing. You have to lobby a lot with the airlines. It takes a while. With WestJet, I believe it was a few years before we actually had them.”

“The Belize Market nonetheless is an exceptional market so that is why you see that as we are more known in the world people will be coming to Belize.”
