Shawn Diaz, a 23-year-old construction worker who police found on a bridge with a bag of cannabis, was initially charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply but in court, the charge was reduced to a lesser charge of possession.

Police say that on Friday, November 24, 2017 while on Jude Street, Diaz was found in possession of 36 grams of cannabis. The drugs were found packaged off in a black plastic bag within four separate transparent plastic bags.

On Monday, November 27, 2017, Diaz was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a single charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply. He pleaded guilty but saw the charge reduced to possession simplicita for 36 grams of cannabis.

He appeared before Senior Magistrate Ford where he was fined $600 plus a $5.00 cost of court which he was ordered to pay by January 31, 2018 in default of 6 months imprisonment.

This is not Diaz’s first conviction before the court.  He has several other convictions for which he was in debt to the court. The Magistrate ordered that he must settle all his outstanding fines before he could go free.
