The inauguration of the Accompanying Measures for Sugar (AMS) 2013 – Construction of the Corozal Wholesale Farmer’s Market will take place on Thursday December 1, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at the Corozal Wholesale Farmer’s Market in Corozal Town.

This project is worth a total of $384,032 with financing provided by the European Union (EU) through funds from the AMS 2013 programme. The Sugar Adaptation Strategy under the AMS 2013 has two objectives. They are to foster diversification of the agricultural production base in the Orange Walk and Corozal districts and to also minimize the overall macroeconomic impacts on the communities of those districts that result from reductions in the guaranteed prices for Belize’s sugar exports and competition in a more liberalized market.

Being that the market is the centre where farmers bring their produce, a newly constructed wholesale market will offer adequate facilities for the vendors to sell their product while providing the vendors with a sheltered structure and amenities. It will also improve and enhance their quality of life and the economy.

Hon. Godwin Hulse, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Hugo Patt, Minister of Labour, Local Government, Rural Development, Public Service, Energy & Public Utilities, Hilberto Campos, Mayor Corozal Town, Yvonne Hyde, National Authorizing Officer, Nicolaus Hansmann, Representative Head of the Delegation, European Union to Belize, and Malgorzata Wasilewska, Ambassador, will officiate the function. Representatives of Contracting firm, Teichroeb & Sons Ltd. as well as other senior public officials will also participate in the ceremony.
