While shepherds watched their flocks by night,

All seated on the ground,

The angel of the Lord came down,

And glory shone around

And glory shone around.

“Fear not,” said he, for mighty dread

Had seized their troubled minds;

“Glad tidings of great joy I bring

To you and all mankind

To you and all mankind.

“To you, in David’s town, this day,

Is born of David’s line

A Savior, who is Christ the Lord;

And this shall be the sign

And this shall be the sign.

The heavenly Babe you there shall find

To human view displayed,

All meanly wrapped in swaddling-clothes

And in a manger laid

And in a manger laid...........”

In a few days time CHRISTIANS around the world will celebrate the birthday of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Christmas should be and is about the BIRTH of Jesus Christ and what it meant to the survival of mankind. The birth of Jesus was the greatest gift that was given to us as mankind. He was sent to us with one special mission in mind.  That mission was to save the world from its sin. Jesus is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. “God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for our sins so that we may have everlasting life. However there are people who will miss the entire reason why we celebrate and will turn it into merriment and take the true reason for Christmas out of the equation.

In Belize though there is another group of people who will use the Christmas season for a completely different reason. That group is the People’s United Party. They have now embarked on the airing of some political advertisement that’s using as backdrops, those things we as CHRISTIANS associate with Christmas. Things such as the NATIVITY SCENE, THREE WISE MEN and even THE STAR that the SHEPHERDS saw in the sky, are what we are referring to. Sadly, we need to ask the question, “IS THERE NOTHING TOO SACRED FOR THE PUP TO USE FOR THEIR OWN SELFISH REASONS?” It seems like the PUP will piggyback and take advantage of any situation, no matter how sacred that situation may be.

We must warn the leadership of the PUP that not only are those advertisements tacky, tasteless and sacrilegious, but they may be BLASPHEMOUS. Using the plight of poor Belizean to try and further the PUP’s selfish POLITICAL AGENDA is bad enough, but to use Christmas and what it means to Christian, is past the mark. We must remind them of what we proclaim to be a Christian Nation. At least that is  stated in the very  first line of our CONSTITUTION and is reproduced here in this essay “WHEREAS the people of Belize affirm that the Nation of Belize shall be founded upon principles which acknowledge the supremacy of God, faith in human rights and fundamental freedoms, the position of the family in a society of free men and free institutions, the dignity of the human person and the equal and inalienable rights with which all members of the human family are endowed by their Creator. Since it was the PUP who wrote and gave us that CONSTITUTION, they cannot now claim ignorance after the fact and the people of Belize won’t let them get away with using a sacred thing like Christmas as a political ploy.
