Police continue to guard a young man who they found at the murder scene of 53 year-old Mark Vasquez, a well-known car dealer from Belize City. Vasquez was stabbed multiple times near his vehicle while he was parked near the sea wall on Marine Parade.

At around 11 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, they responded to reports they received that a fight was taking place near the Radisson Hotel’s marina on Marine Parade. When they arrived they saw a Hispanic male running along the sea wall. He had blood stains on his shirt, and he was suffering from injuries as well. The police did not specify beyond that, but they detained this young man before he could escape.

A few minutes later, they found Vasquez on the ground in a pool of blood, and he was suffering from multiple stab wounds to the neck. The officers rushed him to the KHMH for emergency medical treatment, but about 10 minutes after they found him, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Initial police investigation has revealed that Vasquez was fighting with another man, and they suspect that the other man in the fight is the person they saw fleeing the area. In that fight, Vasquez was stabbed several times to the neck. They have retrieved what they believe is the murder weapon.

The cops don’t yet know what caused the fight, but they intend to question the young man they found on the scene.

Vasquez’s family refused requests for an interview from the press.

Back in March 1998, Mark Vasquez was charged with abetment in the rape of the politician, Marisa Quan. He is the uncle of Bert Vasquez, who is serving a 10 year sentence after being convicted of forcible abduction and indecent assault.
