Belize City police made a huge drug bust of packages of cocaine amounting to over 5 kilograms as well as an illegal firearm and 9 live rounds of ammunitions. The men, 33-year-old Carlos Lopez and 37-year-old Peter Schmitt, of Lord’s Bank and Caye Caulker, respectively, were arrested and charged.

They were taken to court to be arraigned on three criminal charges on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. Lopez and Schmitt were jointly charged with the offenses of kept unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition as well as one count of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply for the purpose of drug trafficking.

In court, Schmitt was represented by attorney Senior Crown Counsel Ellis Arnold while Lopez told the court that he is represented by attorney Oscar Selgado. Both men were informed that the court could not grant them bail but that they could apply for bail at the Supreme Court. As a result, they were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 8, 2018.

Both men’s attorneys have already started the process of applying for bail and Lopez and Schmitt are expected to be before the court for their hearing as early as Friday, December 22, 2017.
