Cornel Gomez found himself in a lockdown cell on his 29th birthday, December 18, 2017. He was arraigned on two counts of aggravated assault with a machete and a toothbrush upon his common-law wife, Tanya Landero, who made a police report. Gomez, a resident of Ladyville, spent a week in police custody before appearing before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford to answer to two counts of aggravated assault.

In court where Gomez was unrepresented, he initially pleaded guilty to the charges and gave an explanation as to why he was doing so. He was hopeful to be imposed a fine and proceed with his life since he is fresh out of prison. He explained that Landero intended to have him sent to jail for his birthday after he told her that he would be celebrating his birthday in a bar.

Gomez admitted that while he slept with a toothbrush, it was only because Landero had threatened to hurt him and he felt fearful for his life but he never used it to assault her.

His guilty plea was not accepted given that he claimed to not have committed the crime and that the story was fabricated by Landero. Since there was no objection to bail for Gomez, he was granted bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same
