The Western Paradise community at mile 8 on the George Price Highway is receiving some much needed assistance with massive and comprehensive drainage works being done by the National Emergency Management Organization Flood Mitigation project. The work comes after Area Representative Hon. Beverly Williams identified that the improper draining in the area was causing major problems for the earthen streets in the community. As a result of lobbying, NEMO stepped in and over the past month they have been in the area digging and linking drains to ensure that water runs off during rainy conditions.

On Tuesday  January 2, the work was bolstered with the assistance of the Belize City  Council through the efforts of Councillor Philip Willougby who coordinated for the city’s pump truck and work crews to be deployed in the area to tackle drains that could not be properly addressed by the backhoe.

According to the Area Rep., following the installation of the drains in the area, she will be doing her best to once again upgrade the streets in the area which are expected to be more durable with better drainage.

This is the first time in the community’s history that this kind of comprehensive drainage work is being done. For this the residents of the area are eternally thankful after suffering for years with water that has nowhere to go and settles on the streets.
