Desmond Lewis, a 35-year-old teacher from Dangriga, was found dead at a house on Antelope Street Extension on December 28, 2017. Police responded to the report and upon arrival, they observed a man of dark complexion in a kneeling position between two beds. The lifeless body had a large cut wound to the throat and another stab wound to the neck.

The body was later identified as Lewis’. He had travelled from his hometown of Dangriga to Belize City earlier that day and was staying at a friend at the Antelope Street address. He was reportedly socializing just hours prior to his death.

His body was transported to the KHMH morgue where a postmortem examination was conducted. Police investigations continue into the matter and according to ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch, one person of interest has been detained and interviewed.

There are accusations that Lewis was found dead in women’s clothing and when asked if it was possible that it was a hate crime, ACP Myvett commented saying “having respect for decency and respect for the family, that is as far as we will say in regards to this matter.”
