Frederick Smith, a 22 year-old Belize City resident of Antelope Street Extension, was gunned down and killed on Sunday, December 31. He became the last murder victim for 2017, and it happened less than 2 hours before he could celebrate the New Year’s Day with family and friends.

Police say that at around 10:40 p.m. on New Years Eve, they were called to an area on his home Street. When they arrived, they found him lying face down in the drain with a gunshot wound to the upper left side of his back. The cops removed him and took him to the KHMH, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Reports are that he was riding away from his mother’s house on Iguana St. Extension. While he was on his way, someone shot him from behind in the back, a fatal injury.

Family members told the press that Smith work as a part-time employee for BEL, and he earned a living to support himself and his child. His family describes him as a family man, and from their perspective, he was not known in his neighborhood as an at-risk youth stirring up trouble and conflict. Unfortunately, the area that he lived in is plagued with gun violence, so much so, that police had to establish a presence, to hopefully act as a deterrent to crime.

Smith leaves behind one daughter, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.

His uncle, who wished not to be identified, told the press, “He was a loving person. He was always smiling, giving jokes. He is not a bad person or one that likes to do negative things. He is a person that lives with his family.”?

While his relative says that he is not “a bad person”, he was, however, charged in connection with a big money robbery back in May of 2015. In that incident, the culprits robbed M&M’s Engineering of $10,000 in cash and another $10,000 in cheques.

Then, in June of 2017, he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking after the Gang Suppression Unit charged him and 2 other men for 3 ounces of marijuana which they found on the group.
