Verdes FC opens defence of national title on the right foot Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize 2017-2018 Closing Season commenced on Saturday 13th January, 2018, with a singular game on the schedule between the National sub-champions the Belmopan Bandits and Placencia Assassins FC at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village.

In the game played, the host team Placencia Assassins FC, was the first onto the scoreboard when Alden Foreman scored the 1st goal of the game in the 13th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. However, the lead was short lived as the Belmopan Bandits was able to get onto the scoreboard when Elroy Smith scored the equalising goal for his team in the 25th minute of play.

The Placencia Assassins FC took the lead once again when Arnie Whyte scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 37th minute of play to give his team a 2-1 lead. However, the Belmopan Bandits offence came roaring back with an answer of its own when Hector Martinez scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 45th minute of play to tie the score at 2-2.

The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Meanwhile, the competition continued on Sunday 14th January with three games across the country.

In the game played at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending National Football champions of Belize Verdes FC opened its defence of its title on the right footing when it edged out Wagiya by the score of 3-2.

Verdes FC was the first to make it onto the scoreboard when Krisean Lopez scored the 1st goal of the game in the 22nd minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The first half of the game ended 1-0 in favour of Verdes FC.

Verdes FC continued its dominance of the game when Jared Davis scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 49th minute of play to give his team a 2-0 lead. It was not until in the closing minutes of the game that the visiting Wagiya FC made it onto the scoreboard when Dixon Martinez scored the 1st of his 2 goals in the 71st minute of play to cut the deficit in half for a 2-1 score.

Dixon Martinez scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 88th minute of play to tie the score at 2-2.

Verdes, playing like a true champion, was able to weather the storm and prevailed when David Trapp scored his team’s 3rd goal of the game in the 92nd minute of play to give Verdes FC the 3-2 win.

At the MCC Grounds in Belize City, the visiting Freedom Fighters edged out the BDF FC by the score of 3-2.

The visiting Freedom Fighters made it to the scoreboard first when Zidane Hines scored the 1st of his 2 goals in the 17th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. The lead was extended when Hines scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 18th minute of play for a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Vallan Symms was able to cut the deficit in half for the Belize Defence Force FC when he scored his team’s 1st goal of the game in the 56th minute of play.

The Freedom Fighters’ George Ortega scored the 3rd goal of the game in the 48th minute of play to increase his team’s 3-1 lead.

The Belize Defence Force FC tried desperately to save face at home when Jaren Lambey scored his team final goal of the game in the 89th minute of play.

Meanwhile, at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town, the visiting Police United FC blasted the San Pedro Pirates by the score of 6-1.

The goals for the Police United squad were scored by Byron Usher in the 36th, 53rd and 64th minutes of play; Daniel Jimenez in the 56th and 84th minutes of play and Andres Makin in the 66th minute of play.

For the San Pedro Pirates FC, the only goal of the game was scored by Highking Roberts in the 12th minute of play.

The competition will continue this coming weekend with four more games on the schedule.
