The murder total for the year as far as Wednesday, January 24, 2018 is at a whopping 11 persons. Four of those eleven murders all happened in a span of hours on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. The earliest of those happened on La Isla Bonita just after 5 p.m. on Crocodile Street in the San Pedrito area. In this shooting, there was one fatality and one injured person.

According to police, the body of Jimel Paul Jex, a resident and laborer of the San Mateo area on San Pedro, was found with apparent gunshot wounds. Upon visiting the San Pedro Polyclinic, Deon Neal, a resident of Caye Caulker, was seen suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. After receiving treatment, he was listed in a stable condition.

Jex and Neal were walking in the San Pedrito Area when they were approached by two persons who fired several shots in their direction. While the case is fairly young, the police suspect that the shooting incident is as a result of the gang rivalry taking place in San Pedro.

Jex and Neal were both being arraigned at the San Pedro Magistrate’s court on separate charges. According to ASP Alejandro Cowo, Jex has previously been acquitted of murder and was actively travelling between San Pedro and Belize City. In an effort to dissuade any retaliation, police presence in San Pedro is high. Thus far, three persons have been detained and police are in pursuit of two others.
