Viewers of Channel 5’s nightly newscast have become accustomed to the undertoned political jabs that the director takes at the UDP on a daily basis, so most of the times the items are taken with a grain of salt. But while viewers have become accustomed to the attacks, what happened on Tuesday night’s newscasts proved to most that even the news is up for sale.

A graphic appeared intermittently on the screen while the news anchor was reading the news. Maybe it was an error, we thought, but then the graphic kept on appearing while the news was on. Our investigations have since revealed that in fact, Channel 5 is placing PUP graphic adverts during the newscast.

As far as we are aware, this has never happened in Belize or in any other part of the world for that matter and it is raising some serious concerns as to the integrity of the information that is being presented by Channel 5. What’s worse is that in one instance one of the interview subjects, Mike Juan, who is the UDP chairman of Unitedville got branded with the PUP ad.

Now the ad placements has caused quite a stir amongst the newsroom staff at Channel 5 as their work is now being compromised by the political agenda of the television station’s directors. To those people we say: we know your colors but please do not force those on your regular viewers, who chose your station to get, if nothing else, what appears to be unaltered information.
