San Pedro Tiger Sharks upend Belmopan Bandits in Opener Print E-mail

The National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) 2018 season opened on Friday 19th January, at the University of Belize Gymnasium between the defending champions the Belmopan Bandits and the sub-champion the San Pedro Tiger Sharks.

The visiting San Pedro Tiger Sharks spoiled the season’s opener for the defending champion when it defeated them by the score of 103-74.

The top scorers for the San Pedro Tiger Sharks were Ashton Edwards with 22 points and a rebound; Jamal Kelly with 20 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal; Douglas Valley with 13 points, 8 points, 2 assists and 2 steals; Raul Roches with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal and Jihad Wright who also scored 13 points, to go along with his 10 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals.

For the defending champions the Belmopan Bandits, the top scorers were Luther da Shane Page with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals; Farron Louriano with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists and a steal; Stephen Williams, who also scored 9 points, to go along with his 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal and Jevaughn McKenzie, who also scored 9 points along with his 1 assist and a steal all in a losing cause.

The competition then continued on Saturday 19th January, 2018, at the Belize Elementary School Gymnasium in Belize City with a single game between the Belize City based Smart Belize Hurricanes and Verdes formerly Cayo Western Ballaz.

The Smart Belize Hurricanes wasted no time in disposing the visiting Verdes by the score of 87-50.

The top scorers for the Smart Belize Hurricanes were Akeem Watters, who scored 25 points to go along with his 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal; Glency Lopez, who contributed 19 points along with his 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal and Tyson Reynolds who scored 12 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and an assist.

Meanwhile, the top scorers for Verdes were Elvis Usher Jr., who scored 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals; Julien Travis, who scored 9 points, grabbed 8 rebounds dished out 2 assists and had 2 steals and Shemar White, who also scored 9 points along with 2 rebounds and a steal.

The competition will continue this coming weekend with three games on the schedule. On Friday 26th January at 9:00 pm at the Belize Elementary School Gymnasium, Belize City Defenders will go up against Smart Belize Hurricanes. At the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio Town also at 9:00 pm San Pedro Tiger Sharks will go up against Verdes. Meanwhile on Saturday 27th January at 9:00 pm at the Russel Chiste Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga Town, the Orange Walk Running Rebels will go up against the Dangriga Dream Ballers.
