The U.S. Embassy held a laboratory equipment handover ceremony from the U.S. Government to the Belize Ministry of Health on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. The event was held at 10:00 am in the Central Health Region Conference Room at the Central Medical Laboratory.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Central America Regional office in Guatemala provided a thermocycler for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (real-time) testing to the Belize National Laboratory. This technology, which is valued at US $75,000, is used for rapid and accurate detection of viruses and bacteria that cause diseases like Zika and influenza.

Health sector developments are a critical piece of advancing all three U.S. Government major partnership priorities in Belize and across all of Central America- citizen security, economic development, and good governance. In the words of Adrienne Galanek, Chargé d’Affaires, US Embassy in Belize, it is impossible to achieve any of those priorities without a healthy population.

Besides the handing over of the actual machinery, the donation also came with training on how to use it as well as maintenance equipment.
