Two Ladyville youths are on remand at the Belize Central Prison after they were arraigned on Friday, January 26, 2018 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, use of deadly means of harm, grievous harm and wounding. The men, 23-year-old Jessie Mejia and 22-year-old Darwin Prado, were charged in relation to the Ladyville shooting incident which left 2 men dead and 2 injured.

The deadly shooting occurred on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 on Marage Road, Japan area of Ladyville. Casey Lozano and Marlon Spain were fatally injured while Jonah Gray and Sydney Humes were injured.

Mejia and Prado appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser who explained to them that no plea would be taken from them. She read them the charges, two joint charges of murder for the death of Lozano and Spain as well as the two charges each of deadly means of harm upon Gray and Humes. They were also read two other charges, one count of grievous harm upon Humes and one count of wounding upon Gray.

Because one of the charges includes murder, the men could not be granted bail and were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until April 26, 2018.

Earlier that morning, Mejia was taken to court before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford on an old case which was adjourned for April 2018. Mejia has two attempted murder cases and a gun charge pending trial. He has had a series of run-ins with the law: he was charged in July 2017 for the shooting of Elward McKay in Belize City. He was also charged for the September 2016 attempted murders of Frank and Leroy Tejeda.
