The body of a male person was found floating in the Belize River in Roaring Creek on December 27, 2017. That body was later identified to be that of Errol Gabourel Smith, a 26-year-old who had recently come out of prison. Gabourel, better known as Rabbit, was trying to turn over a new leaf but was not successful in his attempt. When the body of Gabourel was retrieved from the river, it was learnt that he was murdered with a single gunshot to the head and the autopsy reports indicated that he died as a result of the gunshot wound to his right temple.

The murder left the Roaring Creek village in shock and the Belmopan Police with their work cut out for them but weeks later, the case seems to have been solved. On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, 20-year-old Devon Brooks was formally arrested and charged for the murder of Gabourel.
