The San Pedro murder of Paul Jex and shooting of Deon Neal has seemingly spilled into Belize City streets when police responded to a murder on Plues Street on Thursday, January 24, 2018 just after 1:00 p.m. Based on information received, police visited the first floor of a three storey building where they observed the lifeless body of Darwin Dwayne Simon Velasquez, better known as Simon Velasquez. The body had an apparent gunshot wound to the lower side of the back.

Velasquez, a 24-year-old fisherman and resident of San Pedro, had just arrived in the city when he met his deadly fate. According to police reports, Velasquez was walking on George Street with a female companion when a barrage of gunshots rang out behind them. According to residents in the area, Velasquez was attacked by three men near Bishop Street. In an attempt to ward them off, he ran into a bicycle repair shop but collapsed on the floor from the gunshot wound he had sustained.

The body was transported to the KHMH where it was pronounced dead. It now sits at the morgue awaiting a post mortem examination.

Jex was murdered just two days prior in San Pedro and while it has not yet been confirmed that the murders are connected, it is known that Jex was an affiliate of the George Street Gang, on whose turf Velasquez was shot. Velasquez was detained for questioning in relation to Jex’s murder but was later released. According to ASP Alejandro Cowo, it is suspected that the murder of Velasquez is as a result of gang rivalry.

While no one has yet been detained in Velasquez’s murder, the search continues.
