Belize City Defenders commence 2018 basketball campaign on the right footing Print E-mail

The Pepsi National Elite Basketball League competition continued over the last weekend with three games on the schedule.

On Saturday 3 February, 2018, at the St. Catherine Academy Mercy Centre in Belize City, the Belize City Defenders, in its first official game of the 2018 campaign, upended the Orange Walk Running Rebels by the score of 104-76.

The Belize City Defenders were led by Nigel Jones who scored 30 points to go along with his 13 rebounds and a steal in his season’s opener. Jones had a supporting cast, which consisted of Francis Arana who scored 14 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists and Brandon Rogers who contributed 13 points towards the win.

Meanwhile, the top scorers for the Orange Walk Running Rebels were James Ewing with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal; Roger Reneau with 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists and Vince Young with 15 points to go along with his 2 rebounds and 1 assist.

At the Russel “Chiste” Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga Town, the Dangriga Dream Ballers defeated the defending champions the Belmopan Bandits by the score of 73-65.

The top scorers for the Dangriga Dream Ballers were Daniel Conorquie with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals; Daniel Nolberto who scored 13 points, had 2 rebounds along with 2 assists and Brandon Flowers who scored 11 points had 10 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.

For the Belmopan Bandits, the top scorers were Farron Louriano with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 steals; Luther da Shane Page with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals and Stephen Williams who scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

And then on Sunday 4th February, 2018, at the San Pedro High School Auditorium, the San Pedro Tiger Sharks won handily over the Smart Belize Hurricanes by the score of 73-58.

The top scorers for the San Pedro Tiger Sharks were Ashton Edwards with 21 points, 3 rebounds,3 assists and 5 steals; Jihad Wright wo scored 13 points to go along with his 18 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals and Martevuius Adams who contributed 10 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and a steal.

Meanwhile, the top scorers for the Smart Belize Hurricanes were Akeem Watters with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals and Kurt Burgess with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.

The competition will continue this coming weekend with three more games on the schedule. On Friday 9th February, at the Russel “Chiste” Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga Town at 9:00 pm, Verdes will go up against the Dangriga Dream Ballers. Also at 9:00 pm at the St. Catherine Academy Mercy Centre, the Belmopan Bandits will go up against the Belize City Defenders.

And in the final game of the week scheduled for Saturday 10th February, at 9:00 pm out at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex, the Smart Belize Hurricanes will see actions against the Orange Walk Running Rebels.
