Verdes FC open lead in Premier League Closing Season competition Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize 2017-2018 Closing Season continued over the last weekend with three games on the schedule.

On Sunday 4th February, 2018, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending champions and the league’s leading Verdes FC continued its dominance of the competition when it blanked the host team Placencia Assassins FC by the score of 2-0.

The first goal of the game was scored by Alcides Thomas in the 8th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Verdes FC took the lead into the half time break and in the opening minutes of the second half, Elroy Kuylen scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 47th minute of play for the white-wash win.

At the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town, the San Pedro Pirates picked up its first win of the Closing Season tournament when it edged out the Belize Defence Force FC by the score of 2-1.

The San Pedro Pirates was the first to make it onto the scoreboard when Highking Roberts scored his team’s 1st goal of the game in the 16th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. The San Pedro Pirates took the slim lead into the half time.

In the second half of the game, the Belize Defence Force FC was able to penetrate the San Pedro Pirates defence when Shane Flores scored the equalising goal in the 47th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1. The winning goal for the San Pedro Pirates was scored by Carlos Pertuz in the 90th minute of play to give his team the 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, at the Isodoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, Police United edged out the Freedom Fighters by the score of 2-1.

The visiting Freedom Fighters was the first onto the scoreboard when Kyle Flowers scored his team’s goal in the 12th minute of play to give his team a temporary lead. However, the Police United squad came roaring back with a goal of its own, when Carlton Thomas scored the equalising goal in the 28th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.

The first half of the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Marlon Meza scored the winning goal for the Police United FC in the 81st minute of play via a penalty kick.

The competition will continue this coming weekend.
