The murder of 54-year-old Braulia Pech was one that shook the entire village of Carmelita as well as most of the country. Pech’s murder occurred on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 and for that murder, her son, 26-year-old Andy Rhaburn, has been accused of beating his mother to death with a crowbar, reportedly the result of a disagreement over money. After eluding the police for almost a week, Rhaburn was finally captured on Monday, January 22, 2018 in the vicinity of Rhaburn’s Ridge on the Phillip Goldson Highway.

Even during his capture, Rhaburn exhibited signs of hostility, wielding a machete when approached by police officers. In an effort to subdue him, police shot Rhaburn once and the bullet caught him on the left arm and hip. Since that day until Monday, February 12, 2018, Rhaburn was under police guard at the Northern Regional Hospital where he was receiving treatment for his wounds.

Since his release from the hospital, Rhaburn has been charged for attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm against 43-year-old Lilia Xujur, a woman he also reportedly attacked on the day of his mother’s murder. If it were not for the intervention of Curtis Wade, a villager, she could have been Rhaburn’s second murder victim.

As a result of the charges he was remanded to prison and is expected to be brought back to court for further charges related to the death of his mother.
