San Pedro Pirates FC clip the high soaring Verdes FC in Premier League Closing Season play Print E-mail

The Premier League of Belize Closing Season competition continued over the last weekend with four games on the schedule.

On Sunday 11th February, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending champions and current leaders in this year’s Closing Season competition Verdes FC, was stop in it tracks by the least unlikely candidate the San Pedro Pirates FC by the score of 2-1 to hand Verdes FC its first loss of the competition.

The San Pedro Pirates FC was the first onto the scoreboard when Inri Gonzaga scored the 1st goal of the game in the 6th minute of play via a penalty kick to give his team a 1-0 lead. The lead was further extended when Gonzaga scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 37th minute of play to give his team a 2-0 lead.

The first half of the game ended 2-0 in favour of the San Pedro Pirates FC.

It was not until well into the second half of the game that the host team Verdes FC was able to make it onto the scoreboard when Elroy Kuylen scored his team’s only goal of the game in the 65th minute of play to cut the deficit into half.  However, Verdes started on its comeback to late and came up short at the end of the long whistle.

At the Victor Sanchez Union Field in Punta Gorda Town, the Belmopan Bandits won over the Freedom Fighters by the score of 4-2.

The Freedom Fighters was the first on the scoreboard when Kyle Flowers scored his team’s 1st goal of the game in the 14th minute of play to give his team an early lead. However, the lead was short lived as Rony Sanchez scored the equalising goal for the Belmopan Bandits in the 25th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.  The Freedom Fighters were able to untie the score when Kyle Flowers scored his 2nd goal of the game in the 44th minute of play to give his team a 2-1 lead that they took into the half time.

In the second half of the game, the visiting Belmopan Bandits SC launched its offensive onslaught on the Freedom Fighters when it tallied three more goals at the end of the game for the win.

Elroy Smith scored the equalising goal for the Belmopan Bandits SC in the 54th minute of play to tie the score at 2-2. In the 59th minute of play, Darwin Bermudez scored his team’s go-ahead goal for a 3-2 lead. Norman Anderson then scored the 4th and final goal of the game in the 82nd minute of play to give his team the 4-2 victory.

Meanwhile, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, the Police United FC and Wagiya FC played to a 1-1 draw.

The visiting Wagiya FC was the first onto the scoreboard when Warren Moss scored his team’s only goal of the game in the 40th minute of play to give his team the lead.

In the second half of the game, Daniel Jimenez scored the equalising goal for the Police United FC in the 53rd minute of play.

And on Saturday 10th February, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village, the Placencia Assassins FC and the Belize Defence Force FC played to a 1-1 draw.

The Placencia Assassins’ Luis Torres scored the 1st goal of the game in the 38th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Placencia Assassins FC took the lead into the half time and well into the second half of the game, and it was not until the closing minutes of the game 90th minute of play that Raymond Ramos scored the equalising goal to tie the score at 1-1 for the Belize Defence Force FC.

The competition will continue this coming weekend.
