Robert Smith Jr., a 37-year-old hunter and farmer of Saint Anne’s Village, is making the claim that he was given a cannabis tree by the police. For that tree, he was taken to the court before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford where he was read a single charge of cultivation of a cannabis plant.

In court on Monday, February 19, 2018, Smith  pleaded not guilty to the charge stating that the tree was found on an empty lot near his residence and was given to him by the police. There was no objection and as a result, he was offered bail in the sum of $2,500 plus one surety of the same, an amount he has not yet been able to meet.

Smith  is currently on remand at the Belize Central Prison until he can post bail. He is due back in court on April 23, 2018.
