Following a shooting incident, on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 just after 10:00 p.m., police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. There they saw Emerson Garnett, a 29-year-old delivery assistant of a Belize City address, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the lower left side of his chest. They also saw Houston Apolonio, a 35-year-old mechanic also of a Belize City address, suffering from a graze to his left shoulder.

Initial Investigation revealed that at about 10:15 p.m., the two men were socializing with others on Police Street when they were approached by two men. Those men pointed a black firearm in their direction and fired several shots which caught Garnett and Apolonio, causing the aforementioned injuries. Apolonio was treated and released while Garnett remains admitted in a critical condition.

Police investigation into this matter has led to the arrest and arraignment of Akeem Augustine, a 23-year-old man who is a well-known criminal figure. Just over 5 months ago, Augustine managed to beat a murder charge but is back behind bars after this recent incident.

On Friday, February 23, 2018, Augustine was arraigned before Magistrate Michelle Trapp in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. There, where he was unrepresented, he was read 5 charges. Three charges of attempted murder of Garnett which included a count of attempted murder, dangerous harm, and use of deadly means of harm upon Garnett. He was also read 2 more counts of aggravated assault with a firearm upon Apolonio and a third victim, Shawn Roches.

No plea was taken since all 5 offenses are being dealt with on indictment. Given the nature of the offenses, bail was denied but he has the option of applying for Supreme Court bail through the assistance of an attorney. As a result, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 17, 2018.
