A stabbing incident on La Isla Carinosa has led to the arraignment and remand of Jermaine Grant. Grant, a 31-year-old resident of Caye Caulker, was accused of the February 19, 2018 stabbing incident of Jamal Bennett.

On Thursday, February 22, 2018, Grant was escorted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after receiving treatment for a stomach virus at the KHMH for two nights. In court, Grant was arraigned before Magistrate Michelle Trapp where he was read 3 criminal offenses. He was read one count of attempted murder, one count of use of deadly means of harm with a deadly instrument, a knife in this case, and one count of dangerous harm upon Jamal Bennett.

In court, no plea was taken but Grant asked permission to speak. He said that he never intentionally stabbed Bennett. According to Grant, Bennett approached him with what appeared to be a gun in the waist of his pants. He said he feared for his life and reacted as a result. The magistrate told him to save his explanation for his defense.

Due to the nature of the offense, he was denied bail and remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until May 15, 2018.

According to police, they responded to a fight in the Palapa area at Caye Caulker on Monday. February 19, 2018 at about 11:00 a.m. They had to set chase after a vessel and upon catching up to that vessel, they found Bennett with stab wounds to his abdomen and shoulder. He was rushed to the polyclinic on the island then later transported to the KHMH. Grant was arrested as a result.
