At 6:40 p.m., on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, police visited the K.H.M.H where they observed Nicholi Rhys, a 26-year-old unemployed Belizean of a Belize City address, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the top of his head. Initial investigations revealed that earlier that night while Rhys was walking at the corner of Prince Street and East Canal, he heard several gunshots and later discovered that he was shot.

Gladimir Avelar, an 11-year-old student, also received a gunshot graze to the left leg while he was standing inside his yard on King Street. Both Rhys and Avelar were transported to the K.H.M.H. where they were treated and released. Police investigations continue.

Several expended shells, a 9mm Glock pistol, and an empty magazine were recovered from the scene. According to ACP Alejandro Cowo, it is suspected that Rhys was targeted in retaliation to a previous shooting that happened within the city on the same vicinity.

Later that same night at about 8:01 p.m., police again visited the K.H.M.H where they observed Aaron Avilez, a 21-year-old pump attendant of a Belize City address, suffering from several apparent gunshot wounds to the body.

Initial investigations revealed that at about 7:30 p.m., Avilez was exiting a barber shop on North Front Street when he was approached by a male person. The gunman pointed a 9mm pistol at him and fired several shots in his direction causing his injuries.  Avilez was transported to the K.H.M.H. where he was admitted in a stable condition.

According to ACP Cowo, Avilez, a resident of Pink’s Alley, was possibly shot in retaliation to Rhys being shot earlier that night. Police investigations continue.
