Koop Sheet Metal was the first to pass the finishing line in Belize City on Monday for the La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge 2018.  In terms of cumulative averages,  over the four days, Koops Sheet Metal made it first, U.E.S Westrac and Bismillah Store came in second, Young Cutters third and the National Institute of Culture and History NICH fourth. We now know that both Koop Sheet Metal and NICH were very close to each other after two days of forward movement to the finish line at the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.

The race had started shortly after 7:00 a.m on a foggy Macal River by the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio last Friday with 53 teams vying for the Kinich A Hau trophy.  At the starting point in San Ignacio, the spirit was so competitive that a Belize Defense Force announcer had to warn that the canoe race would not start until everyone were equally at the starting point.

It is noted that the Harrison Family from San Ignacio have been making significant contributions to the La Ruta Maya Race over the years.

Before the start of the race, Dr. Arlene Harrison, a representative from the Harrison Family pointed out that the 21st running of the La Ruta May was based on three pillars mainly the environment, history and culture. Dr. Harrison urged all participants to keep the river clean “…as we make Belize beautiful.”
