A businessman was shot at by a gunman who opened fire at him while he was driving at the corner of Lacroix Boulevard and Balan Street in Belize City. The gunman failed to shoot him but this did not stop the businessman, Derrol Vernon, from using his firearm to shoot at his assailant. The gunman was shot at and although he managed to escape, his freedom was short-lived.

Kevaughan Staine, the 21-year-old gunman and resident of Belize City, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford on Thursday, March 15, 2018. He appeared unrepresented before the magistrate where he was read a single charge of aggravated assault against Vernon.

The incident allegedly occurred on March 11, 2018. Police came to the scene and that is when Vernon told them what had happened. As a result, they pursued the gunman who was later identified as Staine. He was noticed to have injuries on his foot. In court, Staine said that he was shot at by a man even though he was not armed. He wanted to explain further but the magistrate told him to leave his explanation for his defense in his trial.

Because the offense is alleged to have occurred with the use of a firearm, bail was denied and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
