The United Democratic Party condemns the hypocrisy and dishonesty of the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno. It is common knowledge that when Briceno served as Minister of Natural Resources between 1998 – 2008 he participated in the wholesale, cheap sale of thousands of acres of government land to his family members, PUP cronies – some of whom are currently elected representatives, and to bogus companies owned by himself and family members. In the UDP’s view, that is corruption. Acting in this way, Briceno carried on a tradition similar to when his father served as a member of the PUP cabinet in the 1980s. Briceno has attempted to defend his marred character on a number of occasions stating that no evidence existed. Well, we have acquired the evidence that clearly illustrates the extent to which Briceno enriched himself, his family and cronies using the natural resources he was entrusted to manage.

As recent as Friday, March 23rd, 2018, during the budget debate, Briceno claimed innocence, even while the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow referenced tangible documents showing the reprehensible procurement of government land for the Briceno Empire while he was the Minister.

The pattern of self-enrichment does not stop at Briceno. Other PUP representatives as well as prominent figures in their Party are also incriminated by the hundreds of documents that we are currently examining. Julius Espat, Florencio Marin, Joe Coye, Steve Nembhard and Dan Silva are just a few.

The UDP calls for a proper investigation into the land transactions that were conducted during the Criminal Musa and Briceno Government of 1998 – 2008, with a view to recovering some of the “millions and millions of dollars” and equivalent assets that were robbed from the hardworking people of Belize.
