April the first is Resurrection Sunday, the Christian celebration which arises from the Jewish Passover. Passover began on April 31, so we observe our festival on the first day of the week closest to that date.

The Apostle, missionary, and prolific letter writer Paul penned these words in Colossians 3:1-4, as he meditated on the meaning of the Resurrection of Jesus. “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you will also appear with him in glory.”

The cross is a promise. Jesus died to pay the price for all those things we have done wrong. Paul lists some of them in verse 8 and 9: anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene talk, and lying. The cross is a promise of a new life, a new start. When you go under the waters of baptism, the old person symbolically dies, and a new person rises out of the water. Your past is forgiven, paid for by Jesus, and God the Father remembers no more.

When you begin your new life, the Holy Spirit fills you and becomes your guide, and your teacher. The Holy Spirit will strengthen you, and be your comforter. The empty tomb reminds us that Jesus rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and will soon return to take us there.

I appeal especially to youth in the gang culture. You can be free of any negative lifestyle that has no hope for the future! Turn your life over to Jesus, and you can have a prosperous, happy, and meaningful life on earth, and then everlasting life in Heaven.
