Over the Easter weekend, police were able to arrest and charge the man they believe is responsible for the March 28, 2018 murder of Emmerson Anderson. Anderson, a 44-year-old resident of Belize City, was shot and killed on Ebony Street.

As a result of police investigation, police arrested and charged Anthony Lloyd Reyes, a 20-year-old barber of Mayflower Street, Belize City. Reyes was charged with murder and was read that charge when he was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Because it is an indictable offense, no plea was taken and no bail was offered. As a result, he was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until May 30, 2018.

According to police, on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at about 7:55 p.m., police received information of a shooting and as a result, visited the KHMH. There they saw 44-year-old Emmerson Anderson, a resident of Ebony Street in Belize City, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Initial police investigation revealed that Anderson was gambling with other persons at the corner of Ebony and Sibun Streets when several shots were fired in their direction by a lone gunman who stood at a distance. As that gunman escaped, Anderson’s bullet-ridden body laid on the concrete basketball court until he was rushed to the KHMH. Anderson received injuries to his lower abdomen and succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

According to ASP Alejandro Cowo, it is believed that two of the persons that Anderson was socializing with were the intended targets. Those two men are said to be part of the neighborhood gang.
