Jason James Belencio, a 30 year-old resident of Barrack Road in Belize City, was murdered in front of his mother-in-law’s house on Lovely Lane. A gunman waylaid him and shot him in the head. His is a killing that has those close to him wondering why this father of 3 was targeted.

Just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, police had to respond to reports of a shooting at #18 Lovely Lane. When they arrived the found the motionless body of Belencio on the corner of the street in front of the house. Someone shot him 5 times, including several to the head, and shortly after, those injuries claimed his life.

His family says that he had only just left a gambling establishment which is just around the lane from his mother-in-law’s house. They say that gambling was his favorite past time, and it is something he engages in when he is not was performing his primary responsibility as a loving father to his 3 girls.

His mother in-law, and his common-law wife are clueless as to why the gunman ended his life. He was on his way to check on his mother-in-law as he usually did in the evenings.

He is described as a very attentive parent to his children, acting as the chaperone for them to and from school everyday. His wife says that his daughters looked forward to his presence everyday as the one who dropped them off in the mornings, and picked them up in the evenings. He reportedly made sure to play with them and keep them happy.

Belencio had no known gang affiliations, and back in June 2012, he spoke with the press to emphasize that he stayed far from the street life.

In his own words, Belencio described his persistence to keep away from the streets, saying, “The society makes it look like everyone in the streets is somebody bad but watch me, 24 years old, without a mom and dad. If you look at my record, not even a stick of weed I got charged for. If your mind is set you can do anything.”
